Dear Parents and Students,
Our students have just completed the third set of mathematics and literacy chunk tests. This is one of the ways that we are trying to improve student performance on the Benchmark Examination. The scores from these test help the district identify areas that need improvement. No Child Left Behind has changed the landscape of education.
The Spelling Bee was held February 23 at the junior high school. Our team was: 4th grade Robbie Morphew; 5th grade Jarrett Rogers; and 6th grade Jonathan Lance, Kaylie Efird, Zachery Prickett, Silver Burton, Breona Jones, and Tamira Swift. We are very proud of these outstanding students.
It is time to nominate students for the gifted program. If you think that your child has been overlooked, please contact the school. Parents can refer students.
The NES Quiz Bowl team is amazing. They have won the Delight Tournament, the Murfreesboro Tournament, and the Regional tournament. This team consists of 5th and 6th grade students. They are: Jonathan Lance, Cayden Conrad, Alex Perrin, Dillon Roberts, Nicole Drummond, Kaylie Efrid, Tyler Tollett, Jessica Tate, Alex Kwok, and Breona Jones. The 4th grade team placed 2nd at the Murfreesboro tournament. This team consists of Nicole Smith, Cotton Tipton, Jackson Beavert, Hunter Guffy, Robbie Morphew, Mathew Carver, Adley Kirchoff, Rachel Dawson, Jazmine Johnson, and Brooke Bowden.
After school tutoring has started. We are striving to meet the needs of all students by addressing specific learning areas. It is important that students attend everyday.
We are very pleased that Ms. Leah Hainen has been selected for the "Bring China to Arkansas" program which is part of the global program of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and funded by the Freeman Foundation. She will be an ambassador for China in Southwest Arkansas. She is working on educational materials that will be shared with her colleagues and her students. This is a wonderful opportunity for our school.
Accelerated Reader is a research based program to improve reading. Our school participates in this program and students receive grades each quarter. The last day to take AR test is March 9th. Please listen to your children read orally and encourage them to read daily.
Our students will take the nationally normed Iowa Test of Basic Skills on March 13th and 14th. The data from this test will rank our student performance with that of all other students who takes the examination.
March 16th is the last day of the third quarter and Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on March 20 from 3:30-7:00 PM. Please make an effort to visit your child's teachers. Education is a joint effort between the school and home.
Spring pictures will be made on March 21st. Remember to dress your child appropriately.
We are conducting our cookie dough fund raiser. This is important for our school because it allows us to buy those extras that the budget doesn't cover. I hope that you have noticed the new benches on the front loggia. We are planning improvement for the playground which includes additional equipment.
If you are making plans for spring break, mark your calendar the week of April 2-6. Also, don't forget to check Ed-line. When your child is sick, you can log-on and get assignments.
Our school is centered on issues that are related to the achievement and development of our students.
